A rooster is heard crowing in the distance. Your eyes slowly open and start to adjust to the light playing through the lace curtains in the room. Slowly your mind starts to recognize where you are. This is Grandma's house. Your family is here on a visit.
You pop your head up and hear the muffled sounds of chairs moving and people talking downstairs. Throwing back the blankets you leap out of bed and head for the staircase. Midway down the stairs you become engulfed in the wonderful scent of bacon and fried buttered bread. You jump down the remaining stairs two at a time and run around the corner into the kitchen.
Standing at the doorway you see your Mommy and Grandma cooking at the stove. The rest of the family is already seated at the table talking and joking around. "Well, good morning sleepy-head, " says Grandma as she sits the plate of fried toast on the table. "Come sit down, it's time for breakfast."
No need to look for a seat, you already know your place has been made at the table. Grandma set the place for you like she always does. It has your favorite plate with the matching spoon and fork. On top of the plate sits an egg cup with a soft boiled egg covered in an egg cozy that Grandma hand knitted just for you.
Sitting down, you look up at your family and start to feel just like that little egg on your plate- warm, cozy and secure. Grandma brushes your hair back with her hand and kisses you on the forehead before sitting down to join the rest of the family. It's in that moment that you realize life is good. No, life is better then good. Life is Happy!
Isn't it time we bring a little Happy back to the Breakfast table?
It is amazing how something so small can bring back nostalgic memories of good food and family. I create egg cozies to help keep those memories alive, encourage the next generation to start their own traditions and remind people to reclaim their right to a 'slow' and Happy breakfast.
